Education Impact has delivered more than 150 engagements in 35 different countries since its inception in 2008. Below you will find some of the experiences our Fellows have recently had.

Dan Buckley talks about the Envisioning Workshops he has delivered as a Fellow of Education Impact to several Ministries of Education around the world.

One of Jenny Lewis’s main area ofexpertise lyes in the development of Leadership Programmes like the ones she has delivered in Tanzania for the TZ21 project as well as many other Ministries of Education in a variety of other countries.

Gavin Dykes has carried out strategic reviews of Education Policies for Ministries of Education across the World and has also carried out several other engagements for Education  Impact in Qatar and Azerbaijan to name but two other countries.

WISE 2011 Workshop on Reading Literacy in a Digital World by Oystein Johannessen

The ability to read, understand and share complex and multimodal texts is a key skill in modern society. Without these basic skills, learners will have great difficulties succeeding in other disciplines. As such, reading literacy is prerequisite for achieving personal goals, acquiring knowledge and participating in society. Today, reading is enabled through printed as well as digital texts.

Education Impact will highlight the importance of reading literacy in a digital world in a dedicated workshop at this year´s World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in Doha, Qatar. The summit takes place 1-3 November. The Education Impact workshopat WISE in Doha will be moderated by the Education Impact Fellow Oystein Johannessen from Norway.

The workshop will address the following questions:

1) What is the current knowledge base with regard to reading literacy worldwide?

2) How can emerging technologies such as mobile and handheld devices facilitate the development of reading literacy among learners?

3) What are the hallmarks of successful interventions for the advancement of reading literacy among learners with socio-economic disadvantages?

ICT in Education Envisioning Workshop in Haiti

Education Impact delivered a 3 day workshop for the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MOEVT) in Port-Au-Prince, between June 14th and June 16th, 2011.

This workshop was organized with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Microsoft. IDB supports a large program for the reconstruction of the Haitian education system together with the MOEVT, with the cooperation of many NGOs, private and public partners. Offering education to all children in Haiti is a strategic goal for the President and authorities. Still recovering from the 2010 earthquake, the MOEVT faces an astonishing challenge in achieving this in Haiti which includes rebuilding the infrastructure, updating the curriculum, training teachers, organizing the system as a whole and defining the processes that pull all of this together.

IDB and the MOEVT have stated that they want ICT to play a key role in the new education system and that future citizens of Haiti must acquire the relevant skills to compete in the open economy of the 21st Century. They believe in leveraging ICT for developing the quality and efficiency of the learning activities in all schools and for improving the administration and governance of the education system.

Education Impact was invited to facilitate a workshop for 30 members of the MOEVT who are managing various departments and teams and who worked together to build a vision for the MOEVT and an educational system empowered by ICT. Education Impact helped  define a roadmap for implementing this vision step by step, and to recommend concrete actions to be implemented in the near future.

Philippe Mero (link to profile on EI website), and Claude Luttgens facilitated the workshop and in so doing also presented and discussed a significant amount of relevant analysis, case studies, success stories and educational resources. This was supported by the presentation of experiences and references of a number of other Education Impact Fellows via the use of video conferencing for instance. The workshop also welcomed various experts and speakers from Haiti, and some international consultants sharing their experience.

Claude Luttgens stated that “the 3 days were very interactive and full of motivation and focused passion. For the participants it was a great opportunity to discover and discuss many innovations being implemented around the world, and an important time for sharing their experiences, concerns, goals and expectations with their colleagues whilst building a real team to be able to deal with future challenges they will face in Haiti.”

At the end of the last day, key recommendations for the government and the Ministry were drawn up and presented during the “Haiti ICT in Education Summit”, an international conference organized by the IDB and the MOEVT on June 16th to 18th in Port-Au-Prince.

School Envisioning workshops in India

Education Impact delivered three School Envisioning Workshops in India between the 2nd to the 15th of June in three separate States. These were lead by our Fellow Owen Lynch and supported by an Associate Fellow and an Associate Consultant. This was an important opportunity for Education Impact to engage with some of the key actors involved in Education (and ICT) in India.

Travelling to the cities of Chandigarh, New Delhi, Raipur and finally Lucknow, the Education Impact team met with teachers, principals and officials of different schools as well as certain educational institutions. At each location, a School Envisioning Workshop was delivered to a very receptive participant group. Through presentations and group work and discussions, the attendees were able at the end of each workshop to define concrete objectives for their learners, teachers as well as their community and leaders through to the year 2030.

As importantly, Education Impact was invited to meet with some of India’s key actors in Education and ICT, both at the Federal and State levels. These regularly resulted in lengthy discussions which were seen by all sides as very positive.

Among the senior officials with whom the Education Impact team met with was Dr. Rajaram Sharma, Head of National Council of Educational Research and Training (an organisation of the Federal Government), who welcomed our team. He was kind enough to share with us his view of India’s main economic and social challenges for Education, and subsequent discussions were wide ranging where ICT and education are concerned.

Education Impact’s expertise in ICT for Education, gathered from all contexts and in all regions, is of significant value in developing country contexts, not least India which is due to undergo the biggest growth  in its youth population worldwide and consequently is considering large scale the implementation of ICT in schools to help support this very significant growth.

Additionally, T.C.S. Naidu, Joint Commissioner at the talent school network Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was happy to share NVS’s strategy with us and to consider future partnerships with Education Impact. Dr. Jawahar Surisetti, Advisor to the Government of India also welcomed us in Raipur during the second workshop and introduced us to the Secretary of Education in the state of Chhattisgarh with whom further discussions were had.

Inside look from the Advisory Board of the 2011 Horizon Report K12 Edition

Education Impact got in touch with two of their fellows who were part of the Advisory Board for the creation of the 2011 Horizon Report: K12 Edition.

Gavin Dykes, an expert in the fields of Education and ICT for over 20 years said:

‘Taking part in production of the Horizon Reports as a member of the Advisory Board is a pleasure and a privilege. It is also a wonderful piece of personal development. That taking part encourages each member to reflect on the most important developments and trends in education and technology, to identify where these are taking place and to share these through the Horizon wiki. Of course real sharing is at the very least two way, and thecontributions of other board members inevitably spark new ideas and reflections.

Horizon Reports have been running for some ten years and so provide a tremendous back catalogue tracing the development of technology’s use and impact in education, and also forecasts for the years ahead. It’s worth noting how these are changing. While Cloud Computing and Mobiles appear as the top two technologies in the next year or sooner, closer inspection of examples and comparisons with previous years (and the higher education horizon reports) reveals something more about the evolving adaptation rather than simply the adoption of these technologies for education. So Horizon Reports are well worth reading in the context of time and change.

For those engaged in policy development, further contexts that warrant additional investigation and reflection include culture and geography. The Horizon Report 2010 – Edición Iberoamericana, was produced for Latin America, Spain and Portugal drawing its forecasts from developments in these countries. Such work and its interpretation for new regions and contexts looks set to develop further. That makes the Horizon Reports and their production of growing interest and of ever greater influence.’

Oystein Johannessen, is the Chief Strategy Officer at Cerpus and this were his comments:

‘The 2011 Horizon Report K-12 Edition was published in May. It highlights six emerging technologies, trends and key challenges that are expected to influence the use of technologies for teaching, learning and creative exploration. In my view, the report highlights the need to analyze new technologies in lieu of their pedagogical potential. If we want to achieve technology-based innovations in education, we must strive for a better understanding of the technological complexity that surrounds, influences and improves education. The Horizon Report represents an invaluable contribution to this understanding. Serving on the Advisory Board is both a pleasure and a privilege. You truly feel part of a global, professional community, a community that takes its own medicine by conducting all of its work online.’

Haif Bannayan talks about Public / Private Partnerships and the Jordan Education Initiative

The Jordan Education Initiative is the first major model of public / private partnerships since 2003. It was created under the GEI of the World Economic Forum and today, more than 45 partners including global and local corporations, both private and public and also NGOs and civil societies are working together with the goal of improving the implementation of ICT in Education in Jordan and to create a model of replication for other countries.

In this video, Haif Bannayan, the CEO of the Jordan Education Initiative and an Education Impact Fellow focuses on these main areas:

  • Describing the Jordan Education Initiative: a project targeted at 100 Discovery Schools.
  • Key facts about the JEI and the integration of fiber optic connections, computer labs, etc.

  • Key outcomes of the JEI
  • Recommendations for countries wanting to implement Public / Private Partnerships.

Haif emphasizes the importance of taking strategic approach on these types of projects and locating the key strengths of each partner.
